KB Electric LLC installs many electric vehicle (EV) chargers throughout the Southeastern, PA area (Montgomery County, Berks County, Chester County, Bucks County, Delaware County, PA). One of the brands of EV chargers that customers purchase for us to install is the JuiceBox EV charger. We read last week that the company that produces the JuiceBox charger will no longer be selling them in the U.S. and Canadian market. Let’s go over what we’ve learned, and what our existing JuiceBox EV charging customers should do because of this major decision by the company.
What’s Going On With The JuiceBox EV Charger?
EV Charging company Enel X, the maker of the infamous JuiceBox EV charger for home and commercial-use, announced on October 2nd, 2024 that it is shutting down its business in the U.S. and Canada, leaving many EV charging customers in the dust. The choice to pull out of the U.S. and Canada was mainly due to high interest rates, adding cost to the infrastructure side of the business.
Enel X went on to say that because it was pulling the business from the U.S. and Canadian markets, all of the EV chargers already sold would lose their “smart” functionality as well as customer service on October 11th, 2024. Later on, Enel X retracted its statement for the October 11th date and revised it, telling existing customers they could still use their software for an additional extended period of time, but would still have no customer service. To note: JuiceBox EV charging customers will still be able to charge their EVs; however, they will not be able to use the software soon that allows you to do all of the “smart” things like start and stop charging from your smartphone, scheduling charging sessions, and monitoring the charging on the app.
What Should I Do If I Own A JuiceBox EV Charger?
From an electrician standpoint, it is recommended that the JuiceBox EV chargers be replaced with a different brand if your main selling point for charging your car is the smart software to control your charging from your smartphone. As of now, a JuiceBox customer will not be able to do the “smart” things with the charger like schedule charging times, monitor charging, and start and stop charging via a smartphone/smart device. Keep this in mind also when thinking about replacing your JuiceBox with something else: there will no longer be any customer service for troubleshooting any problems that may arise.
