Harmful effects of Engine Knocking or Detonation

As we have discussed what exactly Knocking or Detonation is, it’s quiet obvious that this phenomenon is of no use. Instead Detonation or Knocking has various harmful effects on IC Engine. Lets see them now.

Mechanical Damage:

Damaged Piston

  • Erosion of piston crown in a similar manner to that of marine propeller blades by cavitation.

As large heavy duty have high noise level which makes it hard to detect Detonation or Knocking. So, corrective measures cannot be taken to avoid it which results in complete damage of piston.

Heat Transfer:

Carbon Deposits:

Intake valve with carbon deposits vs without

Detonation or Knocking results in high rate of carbon deposits and inefficient fuel combustion. These carbon particles damages inner lining of cylinder and when exhausted out from cylinder cause environment pollution.

Power output and efficiency:

Both power output and efficiency decreases because of Knocking or Detonation. This mainly happens because of increase in heat transfer rate.

Noise and Roughness:

Engine runs rough due to Knocking or Detonation because of the development of the pressure waves which vibrates back and forth across cylinder. Presence of vibratory motion causes crankshaft vibrations and rough motion.
